Issue 02 – Mediascape – Page 03

Page 3 is live!  These pages are starting to take a bit longer to get done, mostly because I’m trying to think carefully about color for the story.  Hopefully, this extra effort is a benefit to you, dear readers.

PAGE 3. (6 panels)

PANEL 1
Skulker exits the airlock/tentacle room. Our point of view is facing him as he climbs the steps toward the hallway, simultaneously wringing the water out of his sleeves. Behind him Venetia stands from the prone position Pniaki had her in. She glares angrily at Skulker walking away. Pniaki stands near her, his arms crossed. He's ready to put her back down again if necessary.

M.P. SKULKER:
The thought that you would try to hijack the Rhizome genuinely hurts me Venetia.

M.P. SKULKER:
I might sob.

PANEL 2
Moving to the next moment, Skulker walks towards us, down the hallway just outside the turret room. A few doors here lead to crew quarters and closets. This is where we're really going to start to get a sense of the Rhizome's interior and some of its claustrophobia, combined with the earthiness of hanging plants and dirt on the floor. Venetia follows behind him, rubbing her shoulder where Pniaki pinned her, grimacing a little.

M.P. SKULKER:
We have commonalities you and I.

MP SKULKER:
Neither of us can go home again.

MP SKULKER:
And our primary concern is survival.

PANEL 3
Skulker climbs the spiral stairs that lead up to the Rhizome's bridge. He is about halfway up them, while Venetia is at their bottom step. A POV shot either from the floor, or the top of the staircase might be cool here.

M.P. SKULKER
I'm sorry to tell you this, but the portal is a one-way trip.

M.P. SKULKER
Nothing from this world has been able to travel back to Earth.

PANEL 4
Skulker is now aboard the bridge. Up here, we get a sense of the room, the cool blue light of the ocean spilling in through the Rhizome's "eyes." There are salvage-punk looking devices for steering and navigation. Old-school navigation tools like astrolabes, sextants and nocturnes are scattered across a navigation table. Venetia is now at the top of the spiral staircase that led up here. She's looking less pissed off than she did a few panels ago.

MP SKULKER:
Venetia, despite this tantrum, I already consider you a member of my crew.

MP SKULKER:
Because you're an exile, like the rest of us.

M.P. SKULKER:
But piracy is officially illegal lady. So, call us liberators or smugglers if you have to use labels.

PANEL 5
Venetia looks at Skulker, almost desperately. The enormity of her experience is finally crashing in on her — being in another world and being chased like a criminal — she's starting to realize everything that's happened. Plus, she knows that back home on Earth her situation isn't all that much different. She's always been a displaced stranger, even on Earth. Tears start to well up in her eyes, but she fights to keep them from streaming.

VENETIA:
Honestly?

VENETIA:
I don't even know where home is.

VENEITA:
I don't know if I ever did.

PANEL 6
The Rhizome sails peacefully through the vast ocean, away from our point of view. Its tentacles are retracted and its sheath is fluttering. Maybe show some interesting marine life if you want to cook something fantastic up.

SKULKER (balloon out of ship):
Then let the Rhizome be your home.

SKULKER (balloon out of ship):
Let us be your family now.
